Cats spend a lot of time on their own personal pet care. They groom themselves so that everything is ‘just so’ and they get extremely embarrassed if they don’t manage to do their business in their litter tray. Nevertheless, there are several things that you also need to do to help to keep your cat healthy. Here are just a few:
Look After Her Body Weight
Animal feed can vary from one product to another, and choosing the wrong products can mean that your cat’s body weight shoots up, leading to plenty of other healthcare problems. Discuss with your vet what your cat’s ideal weight should be and monitor it regularly. Choose foods carefully, avoiding the too cheap products which are full of rubbish.
Look After Her Fur and Skin
Brush your cat every day, as this will remove any excess fur and hairballs, which can cause matting and discomfort. Providing a daily brushing will also help you to pick up on any lumps, bare patches or sore spots, which could be the sign of a skin disease, allergy or other health problem. If you have a long-haired cat, you may need to take her for professional grooming to avoid matting and tangles.
Look After Her Gums and Teeth
Cats need help with their dental hygiene and you should check her gums and teeth regularly. Gums should be pink and teeth white and crack-free. As with humans, cats can have a build-up of plaque, which you can reduce with specially-designed dental treats.
