Art stimulates different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. Art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. For some people, art is the entire reason they get out of bed in the morning. You could say "Art is something that makes us more thoughtful and well-rounded humans."

On the other hand, art is such a large part of our everyday lives, we hardly even stop to think about it. Look at the desk or table where you are, right this minute. Someone designed that. It is art. Your shoes are art. Your coffee cup is art. All functional design, well done, is art. So, you could say "Art is something that is both functional and (hopefully) aesthetically pleasing to our eyes."

You might say "Art is in a constant state of change, so nobody can really pin down what it is." The constant change part is true, but the not pinning it down part is going to get you a bad grade. It may even raise a comment or two about your being some sort of wisenheimer. Don't go this route.

Thanks

Hello~~~~~~~~~

Develops the aesthetical theories that bloomed at the end of the eighteenth century and during the nineteenth century, thus criticizing the realistic position (held since Plato that regarded imitative position as the highest value) and the shallow, existing link between art and pleasure. Tolstoy's addition to previously existing theories that stressed the emotional importance pivots on the value of communication-as-infection; which leads him to reject bad or counterfeit art since those are harmful to society inasmuch it damages the people's ability to separate good art from bad art.

Hello

An old conception of art is that it was supposed to be beautiful or represent something. What happened? Are there necessary and sufficient conditions for being art? Ken suggests that art might be a family resemblance concept, that is, lots of different art pieces resemble each other, but there is no underlying thread that connects them all. What makes an artistic process artistic? Ken introduces the guest, Alexander Nehamas, professor at Princeton. Nehamas points out that the first time that the question of what art is came up was in the 19th century in a pamphlet by Leo Tolstoy. Nehamas doubts that one can define art. Ken suggests that art is whatever is made in an artistic process and consumed as art. John counterrs that this is circular. Nehamas points out that most pieces of art in museums were not intended to be art. Nehamas thinks that to be an art objec

Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.

Art is a global activity which encompasses a host of disciplines, as evidenced by the range of words and phrases which have been invented to describe its various forms

The definition of art is controversial in contemporary philosophy. Whether art can be defined has also been a matter of controversy. The philosophical usefulness of a definition of art has also been debated.

Our Earth as Art

Welcome to the Earth as Art Gallery! Here you can view our planet through the beautiful images taken by the Landsat-7 satellite - and most recently, the Terra Satellite's Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). This gallery of images uses the visceral avenue of art to convey the thrilling perspective of the Earth that satellites provide to the viewer.

In late 2003, we added a new set of images from Landsat 7 and ASTER. They are spread throughout our gallery - but have each been labeled as "new". Enjoy!

The Earth as Art on-line gallery premiered in July 2002 and has been hugely popular. We are so glad that the beautiful satellite imagery of our planet has made such a huge impact.

The original Earth as Art images were from the Landsat 7 satellite, and were created by the USGS National Center for EROS to introduce the general public to the Landsat Program, which is administered jointly by USGS and NASA. Various combination of the eight Landsat 7 spectral bands were selected to create the vivid RGB composites featured on this site.

In 2003, a second set of Earth as Art images was put together - this time using images from both Landsat 7 and the Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) aboard the Terra Satellite. We have incorporated these images into our on-line gallery and hope you will enjoy them as much as the first set!
